Macalester geography alumni have taken many paths in terms of education and occupation. Our data on 474 individuals who graduated between 1994 and 2014 with a major in Geography show that Macalester geography alumni enter an impressively diverse set of fields, yet tend to pursue occupations in four areas: 1) education, 2) housing, transportation and land-use, 3) business and finance, and 4) community development. Alumni chart career pathways in additional fields, including environmental work, health and medical professions, information technology, communications professions, art and design professions, retail, restaurant industry, and law. Bachelors Degrees

A majority of graduates (60%) complete their formal educational journey with their bachelor’s degree from Macalester.

Common graduate degrees

About four in ten alumni go on to complete a graduate degree. The three most popular degrees are a Masters in Urban and Regional Planning, a Masters in Geography, and a Masters in Public Policy or Public Administration. These degrees provide alums with access to a variety of occupations.

Less common graduate degrees

Macalester geographers pursue graduate training in a variety of disciplines and professions. This chart shows that alumni who have pursued graduate training in less common degrees still work in a diverse array of fields.

Multiple graduate degrees

A few alumni have pursued multiple graduate degrees in order to acquire specialized skills. They have applied their expertise in a comparably smaller range of fields.
