Zoom Meeting Participation

As a participant, you have a range of options for interacting with others, and configuring your own audio/video experience. You can:

During a meeting:

  1. Select the up arrow to the right of the video camera icon in the lower left hand corner of the screen.
  2. Select ‘Choose Virtual Background…’
  3. Click on an image to select the desired virtual background or add your own image by clicking + and choosing if you want to upload an image or a video.

Outside of a meeting:

  1. Sign in to the Zoom desktop client.
  2. Click your profile picture then click Settings.
  3. Select Virtual Background.
  4. Click on an image to select the desired virtual background or add your own image by clicking + and choosing if you want to upload an image or a video.

This background will now appear for you in all meetings until you change it.

  • Change how you see others in the meeting: you can make Zoom full-screen or miniature, and switch between seeing whoever’s speaking  and seeing a gallery of all participants.
  • Focus your view on a particular speaker in a meeting by pinning their video.
  • Share your screen to show documents or applications on your computer. This only works if the host has enabled this. Regardless: it’s a good idea to ask for permission to begin sharing, either verbally or over chat.
  • Adjust your view when someone else begins screen sharing.
  • Annotate the shared screen or whiteboard (participant instructions are halfway down).
  • Invite others to join the ongoing meeting.
  • Provide feedback to others by doing things like raising your hand, visually indicating a sign for yes or no, asking to go slower.
  • React nonverbally with handclaps or thumbs up (and adjust the skin tone for those reaction emojis).
  • Send chat messages to all meeting participants or individual attendees. Please note: direct/private messages are not kept private if the host or other participants choose to save the chat logs, so be discreet!
  • Record the meeting, if the host has enabled this. Regardless: it’s a good idea to ask for permission to begin recording, either verbally or over chat.
  • Customize profile options like adding a profile picture or setting a personal meeting URL.
  • Change your meeting display name by hovering over your own picture in Gallery view and clicking “Rename”
