This is one in a series of nude photographs of Derrick Cross, a Black dancer who was possibly a part of the NYC gay subculture. Many of Mapplethorpe's photographs brazenly portray gay eroticism. In this picture, Derrick Cross's buttocks and thighs take up the entirety of the space. One leg twists forward into contrapposto, exentuating the glutes.
