Co-Leading Class Discussion

Due: Throughout the semester

Grade value: 10% of your final grade

Purpose

  • Get to know one of your classmates a bit better as you prepare for the class session.
  • Give you all more agency over class discussions.
  • Teach and learn from one another.
  • Allow you to dive a little deeper into the readings/topics of the given day.

Description

You will work in pairs to guide discussion for one day of class. This doesn’t mean you will be responsible for filling the entire hour of class. You will provide a 10-minute introduction to the readings/viewings for that day and then offer 2-3 discussion questions for us all to consider. I am also happy to help facilitate the conversation, but am looking forward to hearing what questions are really interesting for you.

Step 1:

You will only lead class discussion once this semester, with a partner. However, to accommodate everyone’s schedules and preferences to the best of my ability, I’m asking you to select your top 3 choices of day/topic on this Google Form. I will do my best to get you your top choices, and this will also determine who you will partner with for your presentation/discussion-leading.

Step 2:

About a week before your assigned day to present/lead discussion, review the reading materials for that day and let me (Aisling) know if you have any questions about the materials.

Step 3:

  • Make a presentation that responds to the following questions:
    • When were the reading/viewing materials written?
    • Who wrote them? Do a little bit of research into the authors/creators. Where did/do they work? What did/do they do?
    • What were some of the main themes/topics that emerged from the readings/viewings?
    • How do these themes/topics resonate with you? Are there any related materials you’d like to incorporate into the class (articles you’ve read, movies/shows you’ve seen, etc.)?
    • Please include 2-3 discussion questions for your classmates. You can also turn this into an exercise if that is useful (think-pair-share, make a list of xyz on the board, for example, as part of the discussion).

Step 4:

Present your slides and questions to us in class through the use of Google Slides, or your preferred presentation tool.

What am I submitting?

  • Google Slides and your presentation notes, if they are separate from the slides.

Where do I submit it?
