The project I am proposing for this fellowship will be a product of my First Year Course, “We Demand: Student Power, World Building, and Democratizing Higher Education.” The main community assignment of the class is to begin a digital archive of the history of the Cultural House (C House). This will directly expand and build on the digital timeline already devoted to the Cultural House on the “Multiculturalism at Macalester College” webpage. Most of the students enrolled in the course also are residents of the C House. Since the building is slated to be demolished soon, the digital archive also serves as a memorialization to the student activism that created the space in the first place. Part of this work includes students working with the Macalester library to research and do archival work related to student activism and any records pertaining to the history and development of the C House and other cultural houses at Macalester.
