Human Osteology and Paleopathology 3D Study Tool

Project Director: Jane Holmstrom, Anthropology
Part of our 2023/2024 DLA Faculty Fellows Cohort

This new project seeks to create a study tool for students taking Macalester’s course ANTH 240: Human Osteology and Paleopathology. The goal is to use 3D scanning technology and software to scan each bone in the skeletal system then apply labels to each bone identifying landmarks for students to use to study. This will be an incredible tool for Macalester students as ANTH 240 does not have a lab component and oftentimes students cannot attend office hours due to other scheduling constraints. Alternatively, some students learn better by being able to manipulate the object rather than try to recognize various aspects through the 2d black and white textbook. I would like to incorporate a way to select/deselect the labels so students can quiz themselves rather than have a constant marker on a landmark. In addition to a skeletal study guide, I also plan to incorporate pathological conditions into the site.
